West Elm

San Antonio, Texas

What was once a dairy, soda bottling plant, and haunted house was saved from demolition after uncovering the building’s concrete structure and delicate bow-trussed wood roof. Working with home goods retailer West Elm, interior designer MBH, and architect-of-record Villa Park, the firm redesigned the façade as a modern adaptation of its Art Deco past, combining simple, cost-effective materials with expansive custom steel windows. In addition to the new day-lit interior, an adjacent existing warehouse was stripped to its steel-framed roof, providing shaded parking and another nod to the building’s found nature.
