Eureka Retreat + Hotel
Avila Beach, California
Perched on a dramatic hillside overlooking San Luis Obispo Bay, Eureka Retreat + Hotel is a sanctuary where luxury hospitality and nature exist in seamless harmony. Designed with deep respect for its environment, the retreat follows the land’s natural contours, ensuring minimal visual and physical impact. The structure nestles into the hillside, preserving sweeping ocean and rolling hill vistas while remaining nearly imperceptible from above and below. With 32 private suites, guests engage with the tranquility of their surroundings, while contemporary interiors and amenities create an atmosphere of wellness and relaxation.
Guided by principles of sustainability and site sensitivity, the retreat’s architecture embraces the terrain, utilizing existing natural gullies for stormwater management and maintaining ecological balance through permeable green spaces. A planted roofscape further integrates the building into the landscape, reducing its footprint while enhancing insulation and resilience against California’s shifting climate conditions.
The retreat’s orientation maximizes oceanfront views and natural breezes, providing passive cooling while framing the stunning western and northern hills. Guest suites are arranged in terraced blocks, each featuring shared lounge spaces that foster a sense of community. Lush courtyards weave between them, offering serene, sheltered outdoor areas that align with the hillside’s natural drainage patterns.
At the southern edge of the property, the amenity wing of the building emerges as a focal point, its north-facing sawtooth roof capturing daylight to illuminate communal spaces. This two-level hub houses a lounge, dining areas, a catering kitchen, fitness facilities, a pool, outdoor terraces, and event spaces—allowing guests to immerse themselves in the retreat’s luxurious yet natural setting.
Built with durable, climate-resilient materials such as painted steel and concrete, and accented with redwood and Accoya, the retreat blends durability with elegance, ensuring both resilience and longevity. Every aspect of its design—from materials to construction, operations, and controls—prioritizes long-term performance. Dedicated safe spaces offer protection against heat and smoke in the event of wildfire, while strategic site’s features enhance overall resilience. Open areas planted with regional and native species, complemented by extensive irrigation systems and natural barriers, further reinforce climate adaptability.
